Telecommunications and Computer Network Engineering

As the State and national economies have shifted focus from the manufacturing to the services sector, the demand for telecommunications engineers has rapidly expanded.  New technologies have had a vast impact on the availability of communications and information services and have led to the introduction of services such as facsimile, mobile telephony, video-conferencing, and wireless networks.

Telecommunications and Computer Network Engineering option at Southern University emphasizes recent developments in digital technology and communication system architectures.  Technical elective courses convey a solid understanding of the digitization process, information transmission and communications protocols, on-voice and data network architectures and design. The communications project requires an in-depth investigation of particular systems or new technologies.  A unique policy-related course examines the impact of telecommunications technology on society and investigates the methods by which policy is formed.  This is complemented by a practical systems analysis course where the student follows a project from proposal through implementation and into the life-cycle management stage.

Future growth plans include possible expansion in the area of information management and its relationship to network engineering.  New applications, such as multi-media and distributed information databases, depend on a combination of these technologies to optimize their system design.  The curriculum emphasizes application-driven and customer-driven design processes.  Leading-edge applications are examined to determine their impact on transmission, processing and storage requirements, data interfaces and protocols, distributed processing, and the design of user interfaces.
