Southern University Institute for Transportation Studies (SUITS)

In an effort to increase the effectiveness and efficiency within the transportation industry and to increase number of minorities studying and pursuing careers in the transportation industry, CN Railway and Southern University have collaborated to establish the Southern University Institute for Transportation Studies (SUITS) Program.

The SUITS Program serves as a bridge between the National Summer Transportation Institute, a 4-week summer program, which introduces rising 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to issues and careers in the transportation industry and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Fellowship Program, which is a research based transportation program for juniors and seniors.

The SUITS Program is designed to utilize existing courses from various programs within the university, while developing new courses with transportation emphasis such as railway engineering, project management, foundation engineering and construction management. The basics of the program will focus on the various modes of transportation and safety concerns for humans and cargo. To ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and training necessary to excel in the industry upon graduation, Southern University has teamed with the Louisiana Department of Transportation, Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) and the Louisiana Division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide lecturers, materials, laboratory equipment and internship opportunities.
