On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, I want to welcome you to the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR).

Civil engineering is the profession that applies knowledge of mathematical and physical sciences gained by study, experience, and practice to solve the problems of the world community.

Civil engineers are trained to design, build, and maintain transportation systems such as highways, railroads, bridges, transist systems, airport, navigable waterways, and traffic control networks; buildings such as skyscrapers, sports stadiums, parking garages, and warehouses; water resources systems such as dams and aqueducts; and environmental systems such as water and wastewater treatment, landfills, and remediation of hazardous and radioactive wastes.

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Southern University-Baton Rouge is the home of four special programs: the Samuel P. Massie Chair of Excellence Program funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the Southern University Institute for Transportation Studies Program funded by CN Railway, the National Summer Transportation Institute funded by the Federal Highway Administration through the South Carolina State Resource Center and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program, funded by the Federal Highway Administration.. These programs have improved the infrastructure of the department by establishing state-of-the-art laboratories and providing research opportunities for students. In addition these programs have provide stipends and scholarships for students who have met the qualifications to participate in the program(s). We enjoy small class sizes and a faculty committed to excellence in teaching. In addition to the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, the department offers a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is located in the P. B. S.
