LISouthern University and A&M College is a member of LONI Institute (LI). LI was funded by the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Post-Katrina Support Fund Initiative, or PKSFI, and from significant matching funding from all institutions involved. Six research institutions are collaborating on the project – LSU, Louisiana Tech University, Southern University, Tulane University, University of Louisiana-Lafayette and University of New Orleans. The LONI Institute will capitalize on the resources of the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, or LONI, a high-speed, fiber optic network that connects supercomputers at the state’s major research institutions. LONI allows greater collaboration to tackle complex scientific research problems.

LONI allows greater collaboration to tackle complex scientific research problems.  There are three areas of research emphasis, namely: Computational Materials- This area will focus on developing new classes of computational materials that can be used for pharmaceuticals, large-scale modeling and other scientific applications, Computational Biology- This area will focus on applying computational sciences to studying biological processes in the human body as well as in other organisms, and Computational Science- This area will focus primarily on developing novel approaches for data retrieval, storage, archiving and simulation. The tools developed for data in this area will greatly aid the applications in the computational materials and biology groups.
