The
College of Engineering's Computer Aided Engineering
Network (CAEN) is one of the worlds premier computing environments
for engineering-related research and education. There
are seven computer laboratories which contain over 200 computers
that are available for everyday student use and over 500 computers
total for faculty, staff and students. Each computer lab
has at least one laser printer and two labs have 42 inch plotters.
Two 3D printers allow students to generate actual physical 3D models
of CAD drawings. Users have unlimited file and email storage
that is never deleted.
Approximately 40 servers with a combined
storage capacity of over 8 terabytes lie at the heart of COE's
infrastructure and provide services such as email, storage and
video. The network core operates at 1 Gigabit per second
(Gb/s) and is expandable to 40 Gb/s. Our Windows 2000 Computer
Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE) is a walk in 3D virtually
reality center. It is the only Windows 2000 CAVE in the state
of Louisiana and only 1 of 4 in the country. 50 wireless
laptops are available for students to gain secure, wireless access
to their data. A short, but not inclusive list of the applications
used in COE are the latest versions Microsoft Office, Visual Studio.Net,
Project, Visio, Adam, Algor, AutoCAD, Cadence P-Spice Suite, Fluent,
Matlab, SDRC I-deas, Unigraphics, and Xilinx.
The CAEN is made up of several of the following components:
Extreme Networks Black Diamond 6808 chassis
3 Computer Aided Design Labs (90 student computers)
A Computer Aided Engineering Lab (42 student computers)
An Advanced Computing Lab (20 workstations)
A Windows 2000 Cluster
Servers (file, email, web, SQL, SharePoint portal, Project, ISA servers
A CAVE (Computer Automated Virtual Environment)
A Wireless Network
3D, Color and B&W Printers
Courseware Studio (with various forms of media/recording equipment)
A total of over 500 workstations/servers including Dell, Gateway, IBM, HP computers
Networking in more than 100 faculty and staff offices, labs and classrooms.
