RETENTION AND LEARNING CENTER

"...the most potent weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed."
-Bantu Biko

Center Mission

The Southern University College of Engineering Retention and Learning Center is dedicated to serving engineering students by providing academic support services and programs that enhance and encourage student success--by improving; students' connections to other University services and its resources; and by enhancing students' persistence toward graduation.

Center Services

What SERVICES does Retention and Learning Center provide?

1. It provides general Academic Advising to students who have not declared a major and who are interested in engineering.  Students should call 771-5290 to set up an appointment with an advisor.
2. It provides Advising and assistance to students who experience academic difficulty or who have been placed on academic probation or suspension.
3. It provides Peer Tutoring that is available on a "walk-in" basis or by appointment.  Tutoring in the Center covers engineering subjects as well as other specific disciplines.
4. It provides New Student Orientation for matriculation in the College and University through Advising Readiness Training.
5. It provides Mentoring via a process wherein mentors interact with protégés using a holistic approach. Mentors and mentees are carefully paired to foster a nurturing relationship that promotes personal, social, and academic success.
6.

It provides Career Opportunities cubicles which allow students to access information on current job openings and career opportunities quickly and easily.  Also there is a designated PC for career opportunity search cubicle located at the Center.

7.

It provides Scholarships and Financial Aid Corner that displays information on a variety of scholarships, grants, and awards in recognition of students' academic accomplishments, demonstrated need, and outstanding talents.

8. It provides Multimedia Presentation Assistance for class project presentations. Advanced reservation is required to ensure availability of the required setup.

Engineering Reading Room

The Engineering Reading Room (ERR) is located in the South Wing of the Retention and Learning Center on the first floor of the P.B.S. Pinchback Engineering building.  It provides computing  resources in all formats and services which stimulate and meet the informational needs and activities (i.e., teaching, learning, and research) of nearly 800 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate engineering students and 37 engineering faculty members. The purpose of these resources and services is to assist in the education of future engineers and the advancement of engineering knowledge. The fundamental purpose of the ERR is to connect engineering scholars with records of scholarship, in whatever format these records are stored.

All services are available on a "walk-in" basis.

The Engineering Reading Room supports the research and teaching conducted in the graduate school and departments of the College of Engineering. These activities involve the areas of civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering technology, and mechanical engineering.

Policies

The following are policies for the Retention and Learning Center (RLC) lab.

Computer Usage:  The computers in the RLC lab are primarily for tutoring purposes.  If you are on a computer checking your e-mails or searching the NET and a tutor or a fellow student, ask you to give up your computer for tutoring activity, please be courteous and do so.  Remember that priority goes to the student who needs to use tutoring software.

Printing:  Printing will be allowed only for classroom tutoring activities.  Do not print your e-mails or web research from the computers in the RLC lab. Students are limited to printing no more than 10 pages daily.

Paper Allotment:  The paper allotment in this lab is limited to 10 pages daily. Please see the RLC lab front desk for assistance and paper supplies.

Time on Computer:  There is a time limit of 1.5 hours per day student usage allotment on the RLC computers.  Please be courteous and manage your time wisely.

Noise Level:  As a courtesy to students studying in the RLC lab and to others working in offices around the RLC lab, we ask that you keep the noise level down.  If your noise generation level gets too high, you will be asked to keep it down or leave.

Sign In Log:  Please sign the RLC Log.  It is very important that you sign-in because RLC lab Director compiles quarterly statistical reports.  With this information, the Director identifies student need and the level of use of the RLC lab.  An average of 50 different students should be using the RLC lab per day.

Food Policy:   No eating or drinking is allowed in the Retention and Learning Center or the RLC lab.

Bulletin Boards:   There are several bulletin boards in the RLC lab and on the outside walls.  The following are guidelines for the use of each of these bulletin boards:

  • The bulletin board in the RLC lab is for students to review and add announcements that are important for students to know.
  • The bulletin board outside the RLC lab door is for personal student messages.
  • The bulletin board outside the Director’s office is for staff use only.  We will post important information for your review.  Some examples of items that staff will post are: Job listings, Scholarship information, Important announcements for students.
If you would like to post appropriate information on the staff bulletin board, you will need the Director’s approval.

REMEMBER, FAILURE TO ADHERE TO ANY OF THE STATED RETENTION CENTER POLICIES, WILL RESULT IN THE REQUEST FOR YOU TO LEAVE THE PREMISES.
