Purpose of the
Lab: This laboratory is used to reinforce fundamental
concepts in analog communications through hands-on hardware lab experiments
using Lab-Volt and Aligent equipment. This lab is used in conjunction with the
Communication Engineering I (ELEN 409) course.
The experiments and lab assignments cover the fundamentals of signal
modulation and demodulation techniques and various subsystems of communication
systems.
Equipment/Apparatus: The following equipment setups are available for lab use.
Lab-Volt equipment:
Lab-Volt Dual Audio Amplifier (Model
9401), Lab-Volt Frequency Counter (Model 9403),
Dual Function Generator (Model
9402), True RMS Voltmeter/Power Meter (Model 9404), AM/DSB/SSB Generator (Model
9410), AM/DSB Receiver (Model 9411), SSB Receiver (Model 9412), Direct FM
Multiplex Generator (Model 9513), Indirect FM/PM Generator (Model 9414), FM/PM
Receiver (Model 9515), and Power Supply
·
Aligent Spectrum Analyzer Model 8591E (9KHz-1.8 GHz) or Lab-Volt
Spectrum Analyzer (Model 9405)
·
Aligent 54622A Megazoom 100 MHz Oscilloscope (200 MSa/s)
·
HP
4100N LaserJet printer
In addition to the above apparatus, this lab is equipped
with the following equipment: Dell Optiplex GX150
computers, BK Precision 4070A 21.5 MHz Multifunction Arbitrary Waveform
Generators, Agilent 34401A 6 ½ Multimeters, Dell Optiplex
GX270 computers, Gateway 2000 monitors with a Gateway GP7-600 HD and a Dell
Dimension 4100 HD. The Dell Optiplex
GX150 computers include the following MATLAB toolboxes and blocksets
for MATLAB Version 7.3.0.267 (R2006b): a Communications Toolbox, a
Communications Blockset, a Signal Processing Toolbox,
a Signal Processing Blockset, a Control Systems
Toolbox, an Image Processing Toolbox, a Neural Network Toolbox, a Fixed-Point
Toolbox, a Symbolic Math Toolbox, an Optimization Toolbox, and a Wavelet
Toolbox. These computers also have additional programs such as the SPECCTRA ShapeBased Automation Software Version 15.1 Startup, Stateflow, Simulink Control
Design, and the PSPICE Version 10.1 (i.e., Cadence PSD 15.1) software. This lab is also equipped with an Agilent
54642A Megazoom 500 MHz 2 Ga/s Oscilloscope, an Analogue
Unit 33-10, a Digital Unit 33-120, a Feedback Power Supply, and an Agilent
