NATURE OF THE PROGRAM
Southern University at Baton Rouge offers the Master of Engineering program in the College of Engineering. The objective of the Master of Engineering program is to prepare graduates for leadership positions in the engineering profession. Emphasis is placed on solving practical problems in industry and society, in general, for the advancement of technology and the benefit of mankind. The program is interdepartmental and interdisciplinary with five specialty options. Focus is on applied research with a strong tie to industry, federal agencies and economic development within the state.
An important feature of the program is an internship under the supervision of experienced engineers, in industry and/or government, and a graduate faculty advisor. The Master of Engineering degree is awarded upon completion of at least 36 semester credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree requirements. This requirement includes thirty (30) credit hours for coursework and six (6) credit hours for internship. The internship credit towards the Master of Engineering degree, which may be earned through industrial collaboration or in-house engineering applied research projects, accrue at the rate of one semester hour of credit per 120 hours of work. All work and reports are evaluated and approved by the Southern University Graduate Engineering Committee and the graduate student’s advisor.
